Benefits of Water Aerobics
Many people lose the motivation to put in a good workout when the temperature is soaring, even inside a gym or your home, the air conditioner can only go so far. Despite the weather conditions, some people are on the looking for an effective but lower impact exercise routine. A great solution is water aerobics. The professional fitness instructors at our private golf club lead Aquafit classes and the members enjoy the chance to be outside – taking in our amazing mountain views – while getting in their morning exercise. And, you don’t even need to be a great swimmer to participate. Most classes call for standing only waist deep in the pool while exercising using some light equipment and your own body weight.
Aquafit is a 45-minute class, held in Superstition’s resort-style pool, that takes advantage of the buoyancy of the water to protect joints, bones and muscles. This is a perfect class to take after an injury, if you are favoring sore muscles or joints or as a recovery day workout. Really, it’s a fun and challenging workout for any fitness level.
Being in the water takes a lot of strain off your joints and the resistance the water makes this low impact exercise a great cardiovascular workout. The motions raise the heart and breathing rate, which is vital for maintaining proper heart health and increasing endurance.
Because water is nearly 15% as dense as air, water exercises will burn more calories and work double duty as both cardio and strength training.
The water also provides a safer space for toning/strengthening muscles and increasing flexibility. Being in the water naturally slows movements that can be too fast or jerking on land, which has a greater chance of causing an injury. So you get all the key benefits of staying active, with minimized risk.
Fun Fact: studies have shown that being near water can reduce anxiety, making Aquafit classes good for your physical and mental health.
If water sports aren’t your thing, the Sports Club at Superstition Mountain features state of the art cardio machines, free weights and plyometric equipment.
